The Blog for Irish Brides (and Grooms!)

Want your wedding to be a right laugh?!

Last week I wrote about the Fake Wedding I attended in Hotel Meyrick where we were entertained by “Fr Feely” the priest who also does Bertie impressions!  He really added a lift during the speeches of the night and he was keen to let me know that he is now available for wedding entertainment.  As with all wedding entertainment, things go in and out of fashion, maybe now its time to think of a wedding comedian, bringing to life all the political characters, wigs ‘n’all and of course he can also be your priest…. father feely!! :)

AS SEEN ON TV:

RTE’s Celebrity Boxing show, Lords of the Ring, Celebrity Eurostar, The Panel, Bull Island, The Late Late Show, No Frontiers, The Afternoon Show, Fr. Ted, Ni Gaelgoer Me [Tg4]…. And that’s just his day job!!

Alan Shortt has worked as a comedian, writer, actor, broadcaster, for the last 15 years, entertaining both private and corporate clients all over Ireland and abroad with his hilarious political impressions.

His characters include: Brian Cowen, Bertie Ahern, Barrack Obama, Bill Clinton, Michael D Higgins, George Lee, Christy Hennessey ….. And many more.

Alan’s one man show is suited to all corporate events, golf outings, conferences, seminars, staff motivation clinics, and even intimate private social gatherings like weddings.  Alan always insists in meeting the client during the weeks leading up to the event so he gather as information to add to his material for the event. This offers a very personal touch and works really well with the audience.

to get in touch with Alan to discuss your wedding entertainment and get pricing info, you can ring him direct on 086 8394660 but just make sure to let him know you read about him on the weddingdates.ie blog! :)

For the Record…

Apart from the weddingdates.ie blog, I also post photos of venues I visit and love quotes to my Tumblr blog, and I stumbled on this the other day and its such a great quirky idea, I just HAD to share it!

Have your wedding guests sign a record containing your first dance song with metallic permanent markers, and then frame it.  Music lovers should definitely consider this idea.

Straight from NYC! Wedding Trends for 2010

Last Sunday I was invited down to Adare Manor to their wedding fair to check out the property and see what the renowed 5 star property has to offer potential brides.

Let me tell you…ALOT!  It was incredible to see a black carriage being pulled by 2 large black horses with the white feather plumes coming out of the top of their heads!  The Manor itself is really spectacular, and the banqueting hall in particular would be amazing for a wedding ceremony.  For parties up to 90 people they can set the room up with a long extended banquet table - spectacular!

They had invited Wedding Planner to the Stars Tatiana Byron to speak to the brides and grooms to be, about Wedding Trends for 2010.  Diligent as I am, I scribbled notes for you guys so here we go!

A key piece of advice from Tatiana - Approach any decision for your wedding day with one thought in your mind: “How is this going to affect my wedding guests?”  If you always consider your guests then you can’t go too far wrong with your decisions.

Suggestions:

Hitting the Dance Floor: Choosing a Song for Your First Dance

First dances are one of the most memorable parts of the wedding celebration.  However, picking out a song for the first dance can be difficult for couples.  Do you choose something classic, a slow dance, something upbeat, a serious ballad, a goofy song that reminds you of your first date?  It really doesn’t matter, as long as you choose a song that is meaningful to you and makes you happy; the first dance will go swimmingly.  If you’re having trouble coming up with a song, here are some suggestions to get the ball rolling.

Classic First Dance Songs:

Timeless. Popular. These oft-chosen first dance songs tend to feature smooth, slow dance worthy heartfelt lyrics generations have associated with marriage and love.

  1. At Last - Etta James
  2. I Can’t Help Falling in Love - Elvis Presley
  3. Our Love is Here to Stay - Billie Holiday
  4. Unchained Melody - The Righteous Brothers

Songs from Movies:

Have a favorite movie couple that you idolize? Perhaps their theme song will inspire the same kind of passion and romance for you and your beloved.

  1. A Time for Us from Romeo and Juliet - Johnny Mathis
  2. Come What May from Moulin Rouge - Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman
  3. It Had to Be You from When Harry Met Sally - Harry Connick, Jr
  4. Everything I Do (I Do It for You) from Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves - Bryan Adams

Unusual Choices:

Often couples want something a little faster paced or more “contemporary” to mark the start of their life together. Here are a few less traditional, but fun choices.

  1. Buddy Holly - Weezer (great for a 50s/60s theme wedding)
  2. Kiss Me - Sixpence None The Richer (a sweet, unassuming ballad)
  3. Something About Us - Daft Punk (bringing a techno dance edge to the dance floor)

Waking up in Vegas? Fun Casino Wedding Entertainment!

Loving Katy Pery’s song at the moment Waking Up in Vegas, there’s a great video to boot!  Anyway, if you can’t afford to jet off to Vegas to get married in the presence of Elvis himself, then the next best thing is surely to have some Casino Tables as part of your wedding entertainment!

Fun Casino Ireland are now offering their casino night package specifically designed for weddings!  They will advise on how many tables you should have based on the number of guests, but it will set you back between €800 and €1500 for about an hours entertainment for your guests.  This would be ideal between the meal and as the band is setting up.  They have also partnered with another favourite supplier of ours Ireland’s DJ Network to provide you with a complete offering where you can have a full casino night and DJ (about 5 hours of entertainment) for €1695!  This is less than most bands are charging and a real viable alternative if you aren’t really into live music or are looking at managing your costs.

I personally think a night like this would be great for a couple who maybe got married abroad and just want to have a big party when they return home.  What a great way to liven up your wedding party!  Or, if you are doing the second-day-BBQ, add an extra bit of fun with a few casino tables, lively dealers and give your guests something to really talk about after the wedding is all over.

Why not check out the packages available for weddings or call Paul directly to chat about what he can offer.  Fun Casinos Ireland service the whole country.

And to get you in the mood….Watch Katy do her thing! Waking Up in Vegas

40 Licks My Arse!

Probably one of the most memorable aspects of anyones big day is the music and the band plays an all important part (pardon the pun!) in making everyones day a success.  I have written before about wedding bands and how important choosing the right one is.

News broke yesterday that you can hire the Rolling Stones for your wedding for the hefty price tag of €5.7 million, coming in more expensive than the likes of Elton John, Paul McCartney or Kylie Minogue.  But as we all know, there is a recession on, so for those of you out there that are looking to save a bit on the wedding entertainment why not consider 80’s crooner, Rick Astley?!  Compared to The Stones, he is a snip at only £25,000 and at least you know he’s going to be reliable on the night…..

What the heck - take a break from your day to have an ol bop to this….

Top Tips on selecting your Wedding Wine

Many thanks to Mike from Curious Wines for writing this post on choosing your wedding wine. It was originally posted here.

With over 80% of all couples now choosing to bring their own wines to their venue, choosing the perfect wedding wine has become a little bit more complicated than simply taking the hotel ‘house’ red and white.

For those big into their wine this process is undoubtedly one of the more pleasurable aspects of planning the big day; for others it can be an unnerving experience, bamboozled by flowery descriptions, confusing price promotion, and the sheer choice of wines available in the Irish market. For all couples, there’s the desire to please everyone with their choice, and the ever-more important matter of managing a budget.

We’ve put together our top tips for picking your wedding wine, aimed at making the process simpler, less stressful, and hopefully a bit more fun.

1. HOW MUCH WINE?

First things first, how much to buy. The general rule-of-thumb is around half a bottle per guest - equivalent to 2-3 glasses on average, bearing in mind some of your guests won’t drink any wine at all - so if you’re planning on 150 guests, you’re looking at around 75 bottles. In terms of a red/white split, this can depend a little on the season but somewhere between 50-60% white, and 40-50% red is about right.

Any service-oriented wine merchant will provide a consume-or-return option - i.e. whatever you don’t use you can bring back for a full refund - so, if you’re worried about running out of one or both, you can always buy a little more to be on the safe side, knowing you can return whatever you don’t need. (And yes, of course wedo!)

2. HOW MUCH TO SPEND?

There’s two real issues here: (i) what do we have to spend to get something half-decent, and (ii) what’s our overall budget?

We’ve spoken before on the implications of the high fixed duty rate on wine in Ireland, meaning that a €6 bottle of wine is almost 60% tax, whereas at €10, it’s a little over 40%. An extra €4 buys a lot ‘more’ wine in other words. The counter to that is that you’re buying a lot of wine in quantity terms. If your wine budget is €500 and you’ve the above example of 150 guests, you’re looking at €500 divided by 75 bottles. So, you either try to get the best wine you can at €6.67, or you allow a little bit more on your budget.

Generally speaking, €8 to €12 should get you a very acceptable quality of wine. Below that, the proportion of tax means there’s relatively little investment in the actual wine - of course on a sliding scale. On the flip-side, spending more than €12 comes down to how generous/indulgent/flash you want to be - will 150 people fully appreciate the extra expense of the Grand Cru Chablis that you and your partner indulge in at the weekends?

3. RECEPTION AND TOAST DRINKS?

The reception drink is now almost customary, celebrating the official ceremony and welcoming guests to the reception venue. Similarly, the official ‘toast’, often at the end of the speeches, will require another course of drinks to be considered.

For the reception drink, most hotels offer punch, cocktails or sparkling wine, so the option to bring your own bubbly will often be open to you as well. Weigh up the cost of the hotel providing this, versus bringing your own and paying additional corkage, and you can see fairly quickly which represents better value. For the toast, hotels can provide a bar service where orders are taken from guests during the meal. This is a nice touch, but you’ve got to weigh up the average cost of a pint of Guinness/gin and tonic/double brandy, versus the other option of more wine or bubbly.

Often, bringing your own sparkling wine can be much more cost effective, as you can get 8-9 glasses out of a bottle thanks to the smaller size of a standard Champagne ‘flute’. A toast for 150 people could be covered by 20 bottles therefore, although you may want to allow more the reception drinks, as people are more likely to ask for top-ups!

4. WHAT TO BUY.

Whether you’re a seasoned wine drinker or a tee-totaller, the type of wine you choose for your wedding can still be a tricky one. You’re catering for different ages, genders, tastes and wine-drinking experience - how do you pick wines that please everybody?

The first and best piece of advice is “you can’t”. What you can do however is pick wines that appeal to the majority - so-called ‘crowd-pleasers’. Stick with safe, dare we suggest middle-of-the-road, styles. Soft, fruit-driven styles dominate the core wine-drinking market, so no matter how much you love the earthy, barnyard flavours of Burgundy Pinot or the sweet muskiness of Alsace Riesling, you’re probably not going to appeal to the majority of your guests with those choices.

Get advice from your local wine merchant on some suggestions, then organise a tasting party to get a consensus - family, friends and/or the bridal party are good places to start. It’ll give you an idea of which wines appeal to the majority and it’s a good excuse for a fun get-together ahead of the big day.

5. WHERE TO BUY!

Despite the high duty rates and the proximity of France and, in particular, Northern Ireland, there are some compelling reasons to buy your wine in Ireland.

Firstly, there’s the accessibility, advice and recommendations of a good wine merchant. Judge them on their recommendations then decide are they good value versus, for example, the local supermarket (and we won’t get into that again!).

Secondly, back to point 1 on how much wine to buy, check before you buy and you should be able to return any unopened wine after the wedding, ensuring you don’t run out of red because everyone decided to have the beef main course.

Thirdly, many wine merchants will offer delivery to your venue as part of the service. This saves you having to organise collection and delivery in the last few days up to the wedding. (Yes, we do that too, and for free.)

Finally, there is further value in convenience when it comes to buying the wine. In comparing the cost of going to France or even Newry, factor in your time, the cost of transport, any meals or accommodation, and the risk of picking up 100 bottles of Chateauneuf du Vinegar if you don’t get a chance to sample what you’re purchasing.

Fly Me To The Moon! Spectacular Chinese Lanterns

Recently came across a new irish website selling gifts and gadgets and their Flying Chinese Lanterns caught my eye, perfect for an outdoor/marquee wedding and what a great way to get your guests involved and send up a wish for your future wedded happiness!

The Chinese Lanterns will fly for up to 20 minutes and can rise over a mile in the sky – where they will still be visible all around.  Traditionally used in Chinese and Thai celebrations, these are a beautiful and fascinating way to light up the sky - and (my favourite part) It was believed that wishes written on lanterns would rise up to the heavens and come true. :)

A quieter, gentler alternative to fireworks, flying lanterns are the safe, simple and perfect way to create an amazing visual display in the sky, a really memorable addition to any wedding.  See below for a video of them being launched at a wedding.

If you want Flying Chinese Lanterns for your own wedding, check out GStore.ie - they will ship them anywhere in Ireland and go from €25.00 for a pack of 10 to €300.00 for 130 lanterns.

Flair with Favour Boxes

Anything that can do two jobs at a wedding is a cost saver. And whilst wedding favours are still an optional extra in Ireland that a lot of couples skip when they’re looking after the pennies, they can actually be a low-cost way to add flair and style to your reception venue.

Beautifully tied boxes like these can be set on dinner plates and used to tie in your colour theme inexpensively (some caterers and hire firms charge more for coloured napkins!) Add tags to each one with each guest’s name and they make a memorable place card. Stack them in a tower on a cake stand in the middle of the table, and you don’t even need flowers.

These favour boxes are from US retailer Beau Coup, but similar boxes can be found at Irish and UK retail sites, in stores or on Ebay. The key to maximising these little darlings is the ribbons - the bigger the bow and tails, the more oomph they have. These are a bit petite to really act as a decorative element, but wired or wide chiffon ribbon can really work well.

As for what goes inside them - they’re so pretty, do you really care? Okay, sure you do, but it needn’t be expensive. Bulk candy, bird or flower seeds, love heart sweets, or a stack of after dinner mints from your local cash and carry are all great treats for tiny packages.

Hitched without a Hitch!

Well, I am back home in Cork after the wedding of my first cousin Elaine at the weekend to her longstanding boyfriend Gearoid Leonard.  She is now lying on a beach somewhere in Malaysia the lucky duck but after the military-style operation that she pulled off at the weekend she deserves a break!!

I throughly enjoyed being a bridesmaid and being part of Elaine’s big day.  Getting the hair and make up done on the morning of the wedding was such a treat and (thankfully!) the dress zipped up too!!  Everyone played their part to perfection and even the sun shone for the church and photographs.

The reception was in the Diamond Coast Hotel in Enniscrone and the food and service were fantastic.  The menu options were Salmon or Turkey and Ham but the top table had an extra choice of Sea Bass.  The staff were so accomodating and really made us feel welcome, with particular thanks to Mary Clarke who preceeded over everything.  After experiencing first hand the food and the service of the hotel, I would be happy to personally recommend it.  I even got to check out the bridal suite and it is FANTASTIC!

You can check availabilility for your own big day in the Diamond Coast Hotel here.
