Choosing Wedding Colours and Themes: 3 Useful Sources

Your mother in-law wants one colour. You want something else. Your groom has his say and then your mother gives her two cents too. How about consulting a few sources as a starting point:

1. Pinterest
This is a virtual pinboard where people pin up all their favourite things. The various pinboards might not be related to weddings but just strolling through the categories and various boards will get you thinking about themes and colours.

2. Flickr
Flickr has thousands of groups that will get your creativity flowing. Use the link above as a starting point and dig deeper from there. You will be amazed at what you find along the way.

3. Compfight
Compfight is a Creative Commons search tool but you can use it in a unique way for your wedding. By typing in a colour you can bring up multiple search results with images that have been tagged with that colour. The images will not only provide decor inspiration but they will give you a good idea of complimentary colours and also hues that clash.

Happy colour hopping… you might just lose yourself in the colour spectrum!

Wedding Styling….oh so chic

My current obsession is the online shop NotOnTheHighStreet.com which stocks unusual and personalized gifts from sellers all over the UK, things that you cannot get in regular stores.

They have a whole wedding section, and even have a gift list registry which is a brill way to deck out your new home with funky stuff! But, what really took my fancy was the wedding styling section. Styling your wedding is becoming a big deal these days and couples try to personalize their big day as much as possible. That means that no matter where the wedding venue you can put your own stamp on the place and create real memorable moments for your guests.

Check out this fab birdcage Table Plan decoration which can be re-used as a noticeboard in your home after the wedding! Now that is recycling at its best!

Music for a Humanist Ceremony

Humanist ceremonies are becoming more and more popular as they offer an exciting alternative to couples who would prefer not to get married in a church.

There is a great amount of freedom involved in choosing the music for a humanist ceremony, so much so that it’s often hard to know where to start, or stop. Many books are available on music for church weddings but there’s not much out there just yet to help those who wish to have a humanist ceremony.

Having recently sung at a humanist wedding, here’s a little help to get you started…..

Start listening early, once you’ve set the date I would recommend you start actively listening to all your old favourites straight away. It’s important to remember that the day is in your control, you can add music to any stage of the ceremony that you wish.

It would also be worthwhile speaking to a few different singers about their styles and influences before making your final choice. Your choice of music is just one of the ways that you and your partner can express yourselves on the day, be sure to make your choices together and to explain why you want a particular song.

Read some of your favourite poems or stories, reflect on your relationship, use all this information to help you understand what is it you want to say through you music, and remember there are no limitations.

Finally, visualise the day step by step, walking up the aisle, saying your vows, reflection after the vows, walking out as a married couple, imagine different songs at each stage, do this repeatedly and it won’t be long before you know exactly what songs you want and where you want them.

Extreme Weddings and Photos

I’ve been writing blogs both quirky wedding venues and photos, and now here’s both! A photo gallery at BBC News caught my eye with amazing wedding photographs from very unusual venues.

Moira Urquhart and Charlie Brown got married at the Elephant Sanctuary near Kruger Park, South Africa. If you’d like to be the center of attention in your wedding portrait, posing with an elephant may not be the best idea..

Kris Wotton and Stephen Riggs saw an advert for a wedding climb on Australia’s Sydney Harbour Bridge and joked about it.. Anyway, here’s the proof what finally happened!

This gorgeous photo is from Russia. A Teddy Boy-style wedding, inspired by fashion of the 1950s and 60s. Photographer Anastasia Volkova said: “Misha and Masha’s wedding was absolutely unforgettable, colourful and funny.”

Weddings abroad: Best places to get married

If you’ve been considering getting married somewhere on the edge of the world, Lonely Planet has listed the best and definitely unusual places to celebrate weddings.

For example India, Italy, South Africa and Antarctica made it to the list, and I have to admit that these places are far away from ordinary.

From the town of Leh in the northern Indian region of Ladakh you can depart for a two-day trip across the ‘roof of the world’, a lovely global precursor to the roof over your heads. Get married at the end of day one and test your bond on day two by crossing the perilous swing bridges between canyons.

Tuscany is one of the most romantic spots in Europe, so Lonely Planet recommends you to plan your big day under the hot Sun of Italy following way: Hire the main villa for you and your mates, and a series of connected cottages nearby for both sets of family. Get everyone to arrive the night before and meet up in the convivial atmosphere of the local pizzeria. The next day, after a lazy, sunny morning getting ready, be married in the little fresco-painted chapel on the property. Hold an evening reception on the lawns, surrounded by fireflies and caterers with gallon jars of homemade red plonk. Sounds irresistible..

If you’re looking for excitement and an ultimate adventure, you may want to try a shark cage off Gansbaai, 175km southeast of Cape Town, South Africa or join your life partner on the good ship Aurora, on your way to Antarctica. April to October is the peak shark season, and the best time for penguins is either November, when penguin colonies are engaged in courtship rituals or February to March when you’ll see the newborn chicks.

Same sex wedding – Ireland’s first civil partnership today!

The first civil partnership of a gay couple is happening today in Ireland. Barry Dignam and Hugh Walsh will be civilly wed in a registry office in Dublin today, having given the required 3 months notice to the State in January when the civil partnership bill came into effect.

Congrats to the happy couple!

We are going to see alot more gay and lesbian weddings now that the civil partnership bill has come into effect and while many gay couples feel that it is not far enough, it is a big step and should be welcomed. More and more wedding venues and hotels are going to start looking for their bit of the “pink pound” and we have a dedicated section of gay wedding venues for same sex couples to check out.

From the Irish Times website this morning:

Up to April 1st the number of couples who had given notice of intention to enter a civil partnership had reached 267 according to the Department of Social Protection.

Although there are no official figures as to the number of civil partnerships and marriages registered outside the State, the Gay and Lesbian Equality Network (Glen) estimates that there could be up to 1,000 same-sex relationships from 27 overseas jurisdictions which received recognition in Ireland as and from January 13th, 2011.
