Couples Names: Liam Quinn & Dorothy Barrett
Proposal Date: January 1984 with official Engagement on Valentine’s Day
Wedding Date: 6th July 1985
Wedding Location: Cathedral, Ballina, Co. Mayo with reception in Bartra House Hotel
On a cold night at the end of January, Liam ever the gentleman; walked me home from the dance we had been to and right there on the doorstep of my mothers house, he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him! Back then people often went away to get engaged, so a few weeks later we went to Dublin to buy the ring and make it official.
It was Valentines Day and we went to a jewellers on Henry Street where we picked out the ring. We then walked to Stephens Green and sitting down on a bench he put the ring on my finger and we were engaged!
We had about a year and a half engagement and then the wedding was in July the following year.
Name: Grace O’Sullivan
It was christmas morning and i was so excited to see what my boyfriend Daniel had gotten me! We let our 1 year old daughter open her presents first, as she could not wait anyway….then he opened his, they ranged from cds, dvds and then onto his xbox 360. He was delighted.
I opened my first present, it was perfume – no surprise there as i get that for every occasion. Then i got a dvd and cd myself, then on to the last one. I couldn’t guess what it was by the shape……i was so shocked to open it and see inside a hand blender!!! He said he had gotten it for me to help with making our daughter Jennas dinners. Well, “it’s the thought that counts” I thought to myself.
Then we sat round for about an hour waiting to leave to go see my mam, and he gave me my card, which i opened, read and put the envelope in the bin to his horror as he rushed to the bin and asked did i not look inside the envelope?! He brought it over to me and I found a beautiful diamond ring inside, he then popped the question! I was so excited my litle girl didnt know what was going on, and of course i said yes!
We’re getting married next June. I definitly appreciate getting a card now, and always remember to look in the envelope….haha there might be something in it! :)
The winner of our fabulous competition of a weekend break in Whelyn Lodges in Castletownbere is Bronagh Woods. She clearly put some effort into her entry and it gave us a good chuckle here in the office – a deserving winner I think you’ll agree!
He treks mountains, I lie in the sun
I chat with the girls, he goes for a run
He plays footie while I read a book
He likes to eat but never to cookHe’s placid and calm; I’m up to high dough
I like to relax, he’s get up and go
He’d hunt, shoot and fish, I feed the birds
I talk for Ireland; he’s a man of few wordsHis hero’s Rambo, mine’s Bridget Jones
I always text but he always phones
I like to party, he likes us two
He’s into curries, mine’s Irish stew!He lies in bed, I’m up at dawn
He finds Newsline riveting – it’s such a yawn
Do you think as a couple we’re poles apart?
It’s really quite simple – he’s stolen my heartHe lights up my life when he walks through the door
Catches my eye ‘cross a heaving dance floor
He holds my hand when I’m scared or afraid
Saying he loves me, doesn’t need said!I‘ll love him forever, my No.1 man
He makes me laugh, as only he can
Big wedding or small, I’ll be his wife
I’ll stay with this man to the end of my life.
Couples Names: Marie & Greg
Proposal Date: November 2008
My story is a little embarrassing and will probably make me look completely stupid but here’s how my fiancée Greg proposed to me….
We were calling to my parents’ house for dinner one night in November, and it was a miserable night, wind blowing a gale and rain pouring from the heavens. On the way down I was complaining about Greg’s driving, as per usual (I’m a terrible passenger, God love him), and whinging about being tired from work, hungry etc. and just generally being a bit of a pain.
Greg told me that he had heard on the radio that day that there were killer whales seen in Cobh and they were hanging about by a beach near my house (as they do!). He said he wanted to stop to see if we could catch a glimpse of them. Bear in mind it was pitch black, in the middle of winter, with torrential rain so you couldn’t even see two feet in front of you, but I am so stupid I actually believed it, and said “ Yeah sure, why not”.
When we arrived, we could hardly see the windscreen in the dark, let alone the killer whales halfway out to sea. I was really in nagging mode then and was in mid moan, “It’s pitch black, how are we supposed to see them from here”, when he took out a ring box and asked me to marry him. I couldn’t believe it. I was so embarrassed, I was so busy complaining the whole way down in the car that I hadn’t even realised what he had been planning. I was delighted, couldn’t believe he had kept that from me for so long! Brilliant surprise!
Couples Names: Jerh & Carolyn
Proposal Date: October 1995
Wedding Date: 5 March 1996 (remember that but forgot our first anniversary – haven’t forgotten it since though!!)
Wedding Location: Gretna Green, Scotland!
Proposal Story: Jerh proposed in October and had already lined up some gorgeous rings in a jewellery shop in Douglas, so off we went and chose a beautiful solitaire! We decided to avoid the fuss and head to Gretna Green to get married (for the official bit) with a sister from each side (so we wouldn’t be lonesome) and got married in the most beautiful registry office in Gretna (that was the nicest part of Gretna, the rest was pretty drab!).
The four of us celebrated that evening back in Glasgow and then back to Cork a few days later, got dressed in our wedding gear again, had a beautiful ceremony with a blessing (the religious bit) at home with daughter Jess and the rest of the family and then a huge party (the fun bit) in the Rochestown Park Hotel with friends and family and a great rock band!!
