Romance in Winter
While spring and especially summer are flooded with weddings with all the fresh flowers and gentle weather, few people give thought to a winter wedding. Understandably, if you live where snow fall and rain are expected, a lot of brides choose to avoid this time of year for fear they might have to contend with Mother Nature for marrying in winter. But winter is also a very romantic time of year; warm fires in fireplaces and holiday celebrations close at hand lend themselves to the warm sentimentality of weddings. For those that plan a tropical honeymoon in winter or a bed and breakfast getaway because time can’t be taken off of work, this season is perfect for weddings.
There’s a Trick to It
There certainly are a lot of things to consider when planning a winter wedding. It’s not just the weather you have to consider, even though that’s a potential problem no matter what time of year you get married. Instead, venues for the ceremony as well as your reception have to be decided way in advance, sometimes up to two years! Unless you have a very large home or some local museum is built into an old mansion and offers space for weddings, an “at home” wedding in winter isn’t the best idea because your guests would have to enjoy dinner in the bad weather outside! Also, many churches are decorated for the holidays shortly after Halloween. While these decorations might save a little money for you, they might not go with your wedding’s colour scheme or clash with your own flowers. If the church of choice isn’t against it, they might help you and/or your florist take down their decorations to put up yours for a bit.
Speaking of Flowers…
Although red and green and white are popular choices, and some brides may even think that icy blue is what they’re restricted to, you can still go outside the box on color for winter weddings. Roses are always popular and work with practically every colour scheme. Calla lilies, poppies, amaryllis, baby’s breath, and a few more can be found fresh, but if you don’t mind silk flowers which can last an eternity, the sky’s the limit. Just be sure you have someone who can arrange silk flowers into bouquets as beautiful as a natural florist can.
Other Ways to Make Your Winter Event Grand
Bouquets of flowers and little nosegays brighten tables, but so do candles. Warm romantic candles with scents that bring to mind romance and winter itself is a wonderful accent. It’s even better if the candles are scented like the flowers in your bouquets because scent is a powerful memory trigger, and all your guests will remember the beauty of your day when they smell these scents again. Accenting tables with your colours or with gold and silver and things that shine or even using twinkle lights in your reception space is a very nice touch. Don’t get too gaudy or overflowing if it doesn’t fit with your theme or with your stature; you want every detail of the bouquet of flowers to be perfect. Careful planning will result in the winter wedding of your dreams.
